Historic Hotel Demonstrates Commitment to Fire, Health and
Life Safety
WILMINGTON, DEL - (May 1, 2002) - SafePlace
Corporation, an independent provider of safety accreditation
of lodging, commercial, healthcare and educational
facilities, today announced the launch of the SafePlace®
Accreditation program with the accreditation of its first
lodging property, the historic Hotel du Pont in Wilmington,
Delaware.
The award marks the first successful completion of SafePlace
Corporation’s independent assessment of hotel facilities and
operations. Included in the assessment were fire, health and
life safety features that impact guests, visitors and
employees at the Hotel du Pont.
“Recognizing the value the traveling public places on
safety, we are honored to be the first SafePlace Accredited
lodging facility,” said William Sullivan, general manager,
Hotel du Pont. “Commitment to safety, health and the
environment is a DuPont Corporation core value, and we are
pleased to extend its significance to benefit those many
thousands of individuals who choose to work at or stay at
the Hotel du Pont each year.”
SafePlace Accreditation is granted only to those facilities
that have demonstrated measurable compliance with the
requirements of the firm’s accreditation program.

variety of codes, standards and recommended practices for
fire, health and life safety. Its requirements include, but
are not limited to, fire protection measures such as alarm
and sprinkler systems; security measures such as electronic
guest room locking and the use of video surveillance; and
health and life safety measures with regard to housekeeping,
water/air quality and food handling and storage.
Accreditation requirements also include vigilant employee
analysis and education protocols including background and
drug testing as well as emergency management training.
“ As a long-time Wilmington resident, I am especially
delighted that the hotel sought and achieved the first
SafePlace Accreditation among lodging facilities,” said John
C. Fannin III, President & CEO, SafePlace Corporation. “It
is important that properties like the Hotel du Pont are
recognized for the emphasis that they place on safety.
Through third-party accreditation, SafePlace strives not
only to provide the public with a means to measure the
relative safety of one facility over another, but gives
lodging facilities the opportunity to promote their superior
safety to the general public.”
